New Method Being Tested for Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC)
To address meaningful use requirements, Mayo Medical Laboratories (MML) has created a method to pass the Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) result codes to interface clients who choose to receive them; placing the LOINC values in the HL7 result message for those tests that have LOINC assignments in the Mayo LOINC database. This method was built with limited flexibility to address the differing requirements of our client’s different LIS systems. This new method is currently in the testing phase scheduled to be available in production in the near future.
MML is engaged in an ongoing effort to assign LOINC result codes for MML laboratory tests. To date, MML is approximately two-thirds complete with LOINC assignments for laboratory tests results.
MML’s current LOINC database is available to our clients on the MML website posted in spreadsheet format. The available spreadsheet is updated with new LOINC assignments and changes to existing assignments as changes are made to the database. The current LOINC assignments are accessible here. The LOINC codes, where assigned, are also available to MML clients in the MayoAccess test catalog.
