Catching up with Dr. Noseworthy [Twin Cities Business]

Twin Cities Business Journal recently sat down with John Noseworthy, M.D., for "The Interview Issue," which included one-on-one interviews with 28 of the region's key Chief Executive Officers, public policy players, thought leaders and Fortune 500 executives. From business topics and industry trends to vacation destinations and beverage of choice, the questions spanned a variety of topics.

One of the key questions during Dr. Noseworthy's interview was about how Mayo Clinic is doing and how it is tracking its financial plans. Dr. Noseworthy responded by saying, "We were on plan last year. We’re on plan this year [2013]." He went on to say that Mayo has been planning for this for a number of years, and that he is pleased with the efforts and changes the staff has made to "increase the efficiency of our practice, so all our patients get all the care they need, when they need, in the right place; and that our safety, our quality, our efficiency, our patient satisfaction and, really, the value of our care continues to go up."

In addition to Mayo's financial plans, the interview also discussed how Mayo’s expertise will be utilized in the broader health care community. According to Dr. Noseworthy, Mayo's strategy is to try to create a sustainable system to address high costs and increase the quality. "Essentially we’re taking what Mayo knows about how to practice medicine—both the medical side as well as the business side, and how we work—and codifying and digitizing it. This information will be used to create tools for physicians and administrators. That becomes a product that helps doctors provide better care locally."
