Andrew Norgan, M.D., Ph.D.

Andrew Norgan, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Pathology Resident, was recently awarded the 2016 Resident Subspecialty Grant from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). He is among five residents who received a grant during the second round of the 2015–2016 ASCP Resident Subspecialty Grants process.

About the Resident Subspecialty Grant
The $2,000 grant allows Dr. Norgan the valuable opportunity to obtain subspecialty experience in pathology by performing a rotation with well-known experts at an institution where pathology is practiced differently.

Dr. Norgan is a second-year resident and aspires to become a clinical microbiologist and informaticist. In pursuit of this goal, he will spend a month-long clinical informatics rotation this summer at the University of Utah School of Medicine, which has a large, active informatics program.

While at the University of Utah, Dr. Norgan will participate in a data science summer program in which multidisciplinary teams of clinicians, informaticists, and biostatisticians will work together on data selection, analysis, and visualization of real-world clinical data sets. He will also conduct an informatics research project under the direction of Brian Jackson, M.D., a clinical pathologist and informaticist who has research interests in laboratory test utilization and electronic health record decision support.

“I am grateful for this exciting opportunity to obtain subspecialty training in informatics,” Dr. Norgan said of the award.
