Giving Back through Blood Donation

3561123_0004Jerry Dietenberger, a supply chain manager at Mayo Clinic, has been donating blood at the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in Rochester since he first heard about it at Mayo’s “new employee orientation” nine years ago. Since then, he has donated numerous pints of blood and encouraged others in his work unit to donate as well.

“Community service is very important to me, but with two children at home, it’s hard to find time to volunteer after work,” says Dietenberger. “Donating blood at Mayo Clinic is an easy way to give back to others when you do not have a lot of extra time to spare. It takes less than an hour, and if your work area approves it, you can donate during work time.”

Donor Challenges
Dietenberger and his colleagues have participated in several “donor challenges”—friendly competitions that the Blood Donor Center encourages among work units or just between staff within one area. Any team can participate in a challenge with the goal of seeing who can get more people to participate and donate blood within a specified time frame. More donations equals more saved lives.

“In the end, if a person is eligible to donate blood, there really is no excuse to not try to donate,” says Dietenberger. “It’s quick, convenient, and hurts less than your annual flu shot—seriously. And just think of all the people that will benefit from that one selfless act, that one pint of blood. It’s pretty amazing.”
