“Creepy, Dreadful, Wonderful Parasites” May 9: A Parasitologist’s View of the World

Every week, Mayo Clinic microbiologist Bobbi Pritt, M.D., posts a new Parasite Wonders case. This week's case presents a 5-year-old Belgian patient with a small worm-like structure (measuring 12 mm in length) along with a fecal sample. Microscopic examination of the worm-like structure using low power magnification revealed the following. What's the identification?

Bobbi Pritt, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and the Director of the Clinical Parasitology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. She is also the Chair of the Division of Clinical Microbiology. Her research interests are in clinical parasitology, vector-borne diseases and the pathology of infectious diseases.
