Novel Coronavirus Testing Guidance

Mayo Clinic Laboratories (MCL) does not currently offer a test for 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). For patients who have recently traveled to Wuhan, China, or who have potentially been exposed to 2019-nCoV, we recommend providers contact their local public health laboratories to determine whether specific testing for 2019-nCoV is needed.

MCL respiratory panels (RESPM and RESLR) include coronavirus, but the manufacturer, BioFire Diagnostics, has indicated this panel will not detect 2019-nCoV. Therefore, these respiratory panels should not be used for 2019-nCoV detection and diagnosis.

MCL can perform molecular testing for influenza A/B and RSV (FLUNP and FLUMS) or multiplex respiratory panel testing (RESPM or RESLR). Respiratory samples collected from patients under investigation for 2019-nCoV should not be submitted for any other molecular tests or viral culture tests.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring the situation and will provide updated information as it becomes available.
