Rapid City Regional Hospital (RCRH), a 417 bed hospital located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, identified a marked increase in the use of blood products and associated costs at a time when blood components were in short supply. After hearing James Stubbs, M.D., medical director of transfusion medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester, speak about best practices and the financial impact of transfusion medicine costs, RCRH implemented a blood management program to decrease blood usage.
Mayo Clinic and Silicon Valley Biosystems (SV Bio) today announced a strategic collaboration for whole genome diagnostics and interpretation at the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine and Mayo Medical Laboratories. This strategic collaboration unites SV Bio’s proprietary genome interpretation solution with Mayo Clinic’s growing genome reference library and its commitment to individualized medicine, and will increase accessibility and clinical utility of next-generation sequencing for patients.
A common ordering error among molecular tests is ordering a diagnostic test when a known-mutation test is indicated, and vice versa. Mayo Medical Laboratories offers tests to either diagnose the disease or determine if a previously identified genetic abnormality is present in a family member.
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are nonspecific tests for acute inflammatory processes. Studies have demonstrated equivalent performance of ESR and CRP in a majority of patient populations, with the exception of patients with temporal arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica. Mayo Clinic identified and evaluated patient populations where ESR and CRP were ordered concurrently to determine whether there was any added value to ordering both tests.
A recent review of Mayo Medical Laboratories test requests revealed an increase in orders for erythrocyte magnesium (Mg-RBC) and erythrocyte zinc (Zn-RBC). Discussions with health care providers ordering these tests indicate that Mg-RBC is used almost solely to assess nutritional status in diabetic patients. In this spotlight, Mayo Medical Laboratories investigated the utility of red blood cell testing.
Today’s clinical laboratory can offer a wide expanse of various genetic tests that can be requested by a clinician. The large repertoire of genetic testing services offered by Mayo Medical Laboratories can make selecting the appropriate test complicated. Mayo Clinic’s laboratory genetic counselors are available to help physicians select the most appropriate tests for their patients and reduce unnecessary testing.
