Overview

Mayo Clinic’s 6th Annual Forensic Science Symposium explores a variety of worksites investigators may traverse, from the courtroom to the farm, to the great outdoors. Reviews of regional species, infections, and communicable diseases will be presented in the context of human deaths and their case investigations. Leading experts in forensic science will cover timely topics, such as asphyxial deaths, vaping-related injuries, and COVID-19 related cardiac disease.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for M.D. (Medical Examiner, Coroner), Ph.D., PA(ASCP), Death Investigator, County Attorney, Funeral Director, Crime Technicians, and Law Enforcement Officers interested in forensic science.



Agenda

Objectives

Upon completion of the conference, participants should be able to:

  • Define common courtroom proceedings and apply appropriate terminology for death cases.
  • Recognize blunt force trauma specific to farming accidents.
  • Define ‘in custody’ and know the nuances of cases that result in death while in custody.
  • Describe the effects of prion disease on the human body and the application of chronic wasting disease in context.
  • Describe the effects of environmental and other exposure-related deaths, including relative case examples for the region.

Mortuary Science

This live conference has been submitted for approval to the Mortuary Section of the Minnesota Department of Health for continuing education credit for up to 6.0 hours of continuing education.

Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST)

This live conference has been submitted for approval to the POST Board for continuing education credit.

The level of instruction for this program is intermediate.

To obtain credit:

  1. Register for and participate in the program.
  2. Complete the evaluation that will be sent to you after the program.
  3. Generate and print your certificate(s).

 

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your participation in this conference on or before April 2, 2021, your registration fee, less a $30 administrative fee, will be refunded. Mayo Clinic Laboratories Education Department must receive written notification of your cancellation. No refunds will be made after April 2, 2021.

Mayo Clinic Laboratories reserves the right to cancel or postpone any conference due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event Mayo Clinic Laboratories must cancel or postpone this conference, Mayo Clinic Laboratories will refund the registration fee but is not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses to participants.
