Overview

This session will focus on the challenges associated with age-related collections, dealing specifically with both the pediatric and geriatric patient. Techniques will be discussed that will meet the needs of the patients and allow the successful collection of a quality specimen. Age-specific competency assessment criteria will be discussed as it relates to training and maintaining necessary staff.

Objectives

  • Define the phlebotomy challenges associated with pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Identify ways to adapt learned techniques for performing difficult collections.
  • Discuss age-specific competency issues as part of a phlebotomist’s training.
