The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Society for Microbiology recently released a new guidebook for laboratories, A Guide to Utilization of the Microbiology Laboratory for Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases: 2018 Update. This in-depth guide, which highlights the knowledge and experience of 20 subject-matter experts, "provides information on which tests are valuable and in which contexts, and on tests that add little or no value for diagnostic decisions,” with the goal to aid health care providers in choosing the right test.
The guide was published in Clinical Infectious Diseases and lists five Mayo Clinic physician/scientists as contributing authors. Learn more about them below:
Matthew Binnicker, Ph.D., is a Consultant in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, and he holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Dr. Binnicker serves as the Vice Chair of Practice, Vice Chair of Supply Chain Management, and Director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory at Mayo. He is also the Program Director of the Ph.D. Fellowship Program within Mayo's Division of Clinical Microbiology.
Robin Patel, M.D., is Chair of the Division of Clinical Microbiology and a Consultant in the Division of Clinical Microbiology and Division of Infectious Diseases. She holds the academic ranks of Professor of Microbiology and Professor of Medicine from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and is the Elizabeth P. and Robert E. Allen Professor of Individualized Medicine. Dr. Patel also serves as Director of the Infectious Disease Research Laboratory and Director of the Bacteriology Laboratory.
Bobbi Pritt, M.D., is a Consultant in the Clinical Microbiology Division at Mayo Clinic. She is Director of the Clinical Parasitology Laboratory and Co-Director of Vector-Borne Diseases Lab Services. Dr. Pritt serves as Vice Chair of Education and holds the academic rank of Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.
Elitza Theel, Ph.D., is the Director of the Infectious Diseases Serology Laboratory and Co-Director of the Vector-Borne Diseases Laboratory. She holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Joseph Yao, M.D., is a Consultant in the Division of Clinical Microbiology. He holds the academic ranks of Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine And Pathology, Associate Professor of Medicine, and Assistant Professor of Microbiology from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
