Elitza Theel, Ph.D., director, Mayo Clinic Infectious Diseases Serology Laboratory, was recently highlighted in the Star Tribune's special issue featuring heroes of the pandemic.
Along with many in health care and other industries, Dr. Theel worked around the clock to create one of the country's first antibody tests in response to COVID-19. The test uses a blood sample to determine if COVID-19 antibodies are present in the body. Antibodies play a role in measuring infection rates in population groups, as well as helping determine whether individuals are candidates for donating plasma for potential COVID-19 treatments.
