Using customized middleware software to autoverify test results can help hospital labs and health systems overcome staffing shortages, maintain compliance with quality requirements, and better meet turnaround time expectations. But there are times — and crucial steps along the verification process — when the skills, knowledge, and experience of a skilled lab tech are still needed.
In an article that appears in the August 2022 issue of the College of American Pathologists’ monthly CAP Today magazine, Darci Block, Ph.D., co-director of the Central Clinical Lab in Mayo Clinic’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in Rochester, Minnesota, discusses how and when autoverification is used — and not used — to help verify the approximately 8,000 specimens that are sent to the department’s Central Clinical Lab every day. Dr. Block also gave a presentation on the same topic during Pathology Informatics’ Summit 2022 in May.
