New Year's Specimen Shipping Guidelines and Schedule


Operational Update

Mayo Clinic Laboratories' specimen pickup and delivery schedules will be altered for the New Year's holiday. To ensure specimen viability and minimize delays, the following adjustments and guidelines have been implemented and will be communicated to clients and couriers today. 

Guidelines for domestic clients

1. Clients with courier service

  • No UPS shipments on Dec. 31 or Jan. 1.
  • All UPS shipments on Dec. 31 or Jan. 1 will be rerouted to FedEx or Delta by the Global Logistics specialist.
  • Clients will be notified by the courier if pick-up times are adjusted.

2. Clients that self-ship

  • Do not ship UPS on Dec. 31 or Jan. 2.
  • If shipping via FedEx, please include additional frozen cool packs for refrigerated shipments and ensure sufficient dry ice accommodates extended transit times.

3. All clients

  • Delays at the originating shipping location on Monday, Dec. 30 could result in the earliest arrival at Mayo Clinic Laboratories on Thursday, Jan. 2.
  • To avoid delays, we recommend holding all samples, especially refrigerated items, at your facility Dec. 31 - Jan 1.
  • Resume regular shipping on Jan. 2.

Domestic client shipping schedule (with courier service)

Monday, Dec. 30

  • Regular courier pickups
  • Note: Any delays at the originating shipping location may lead to the earliest arrival to Mayo Clinic Laboratories on Thursday, Dec. 2. 

Tuesday, Dec. 31

  • We recommend not shipping on this day to avoid delays.
  • Normal courier pickups. Note:
    • Clients choosing to ship FedEx or Delta, expect delays.
    • Delivery for FedEx will be Dec. 2.
    • To cancel a pick-up call: 1- 800-533-1710.

Wednesday, Jan. 1

  • No pickups

Thursday, Jan. 2

  • Regular courier pickups

Guidelines for international clients

To ensure the safety and stability of samples, follow these guidelines:

  • Shipments with a one-day transit time - do not ship on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
  • Shipments with two or three-day transit – avoid shipping on Monday, Dec. 30.
  • Shipments with three-day transit times - avoid shipping on Sunday, Dec. 29.
    • Note: These shipments may experience delays due to U.S. Customs and may not be delivered until Thursday, Jan. 2 or later. Please keep irretrievable samples stable until Thursday, Jan. 2.
  • Normal carrier deliveries (UPS, FedEx, DHL) will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2. When creating shipments, follow the standard shipping process and select "Saturday Delivery" on your airway bill.

International client shipping schedule

  • 1-day transit: OK to ship
  • 2-day transit: OK to ship
  • 3-day transit: Do not ship

Monday, Dec. 30

  • 1-day transit: OK to ship; clients in Mexico should not ship.
  • 2-day transit: Do not ship 
  • 3-day transit: Do not ship

  • 1-day transit: Do not ship
  • 2-day transit: OK to ship
  • 3-day transit: OK to ship
