Genetic Testing for Inherited Cardiovascular Disorders

Overview

Inherited cardiovascular disorders are genetically diverse conditions that may affect cardiac structure or function and may be isolated or syndromic. Because many genes can be involved, and because clinical features often vary and overlap across disorders, diagnosis based on phenotype alone may be challenging. Next-generation sequencing gene panels provide an efficient approach to evaluating these conditions and supporting more precise diagnosis.

Learning objectives

  • Recall the major categories of inherited cardiovascular conditions.
  • Describe the importance of gene panel testing for inherited cardiovascular conditions.
  • Discuss the clinical utility of genetic testing for inherited cardiovascular conditions.
