Anti-Platelet Factor 4 Antibody-Mediated Prothrombotic Syndromes

Video Length: 48 minutes

Overview

In this month's "Virtual Lecture," Anand Padmanabhan, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., associate professor of laboratory medicine and pathology at Mayo Clinic, provides a general overview and science in the field related to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), and monoclonal gammopathy of thrombotic significance (MGTS). The lecture also focuses on impacts related to diagnosis for anti-platelet factor 4-mediated thrombotic syndromes.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recall that platelet factor 4 (PF4) is a target of antibodies in certain prothrombotic states.
  • Review the heterogeneity of presentations in anti-PF4 mediated syndromes.
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of a recently recognized anti-PF4 mediated prothrombotic disease, monoclonal gammopathy of thrombotic significance (MGTS).

Intended audience

This program is appropriate for clinicians, pathologists, medical technologists, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health staff.
