Dr. Bill Morice shares the elements of an effective innovation strategy


Innovation is widely regarded as essential to progress, especially in healthcare, where breakthroughs can dramatically change patient outcomes. But these advancements don’t happen on their own. William Morice II, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic Laboratories, recently shared insights on innovation strategy in both an article and podcast with Becker’s Hospital Review, focusing on driving transformation and value.

“Innovation in healthcare demands more than ideas,” says Dr. Morice. “It requires moving beyond fragmented processes and creating a unified framework to drive focus, structure and prioritization.”

Dedicated resources are essential for innovation to succeed. Embedding innovation resources within daily operations often causes it to be deprioritized in favor of production demands. Treating innovation as a separate investment also ensures more consistent allocation, clearer tracking, and stronger collaboration.

Stakeholder engagement and clear communication


Stakeholder engagement and clear communication are critical to building alignment and sustaining momentum. Engaging diverse stakeholders early and throughout the process of developing a framework helps shape priorities, ensures innovation remains practical and patient-centered, and strengthens buy-in. Once priorities are set, transparent and consistent communication is crucial.

Regular, data-driven reviews


Regular, data-driven reviews allow leaders to pivot, retire low-value projects, and invest in emerging opportunities to help maintain strategic direction in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment. Combining regular assessment with a clear framework for innovation helps organizations stay strategically focused while remaining responsive to change.
