When the COVID-19 pandemic began, laboratory medicine was one of the areas of science and research most affected. From developing tests that detect the virus, to testing for antibodies in patients who have recovered, Mayo Clinic Laboratories has been at the forefront of COVID-19 testing and research.

On a recent episode of the "Mayo Clinic Q&A" podcast, William Morice II, M.D., Ph.D., president of Mayo Clinic Laboratories and chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic, explained how a reference lab works and how Mayo Clinic Laboratories quickly ramped up its testing capability to meet pandemic testing needs.
