New pharmacogenetics program helps St. Clair Health improve patient care
Case Study
When Karl Bushman, M.D., was asked to help establish a new pharmacogenetics (PGx) program at St. Clair Health in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he could have turned to any number of outside laboratories to perform the PGx analysis he knew patients would need. But thanks to St. Claire Health’s existing relationship with Mayo Clinic and membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network, Dr. Bushman knew Mayo Clinic Laboratories was the right reference lab for the job. “There are other labs in our area that can provide PGx analysis, but what sets the Mayo Clinic test apart is the clinical interface and personalized interpretation that shows what genes the patient has and what medicines and dosages should be used,” he says. “I’m not a lab guy; I’m a clinical guy. So, I like having that additional information. It’s much more user-friendly.”
