Amy Clayton, M.D., Appointed Anatomic Pathology Division Chair

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is pleased to announce the appointment of Amy Clayton, M.D., as the new Chair of the Division of Anatomic Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Dr. Clayton joined the Division of AP in 1997 as a Senior Associate Consultant. She is now a Consultant in the division and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Currently, Dr. Clayton is the Vice Chair of DLMP Clinical Practice and Quality, and she serves as Chair of the DLMP CPC and the Quality Oversight Subcommittee. She also oversees the DLMP portion of the Plummer Project (redefining workflows, reporting formats, and the implementation of utilization management opportunities within the future Epic EHR). Dr. Clayton is a member of several committees including the DLMP Executive Committee, DLMP Finance Committee, and she serves on the Institutional Personnel Committee, the Enterprise Outpatient Care Delivery Platform, and the Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Specialty Council.

Dr. Clayton’s research interests include practice improvements in cytopathology, quality and diagnostic accuracy, molecular applications, and expanding the role of cytotechnologists. She is an active educator whose many honors include Teacher of the Year three times, including the Hall of Fame Award in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology from the Mayo Clinic Fellows Association.

Dr. Clayton received her undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from Iowa Wesleyan College and completed her master’s in biochemistry from the University of Kansas. She earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center and completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and a fellowship in surgical pathology at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Gary Keeney, M.D., who has served as the AP Division Chair for more than eight years. Dr. Clayton will work with Dr. Keeney through April 28 on transition planning and rotate out of her DLMP Vice Chair role in April.
