Matthew Binnicker, Ph.D., discusses the active respiratory illness season ahead

Matthew Binnicker, Ph.D., director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, was featured in an NBC News article about how hospitals are preparing for a busy winter with an increased spread of COVID-19, influenza, and other respiratory illnesses.

As the cold weather approaches and people move indoors, experts are expecting a challenging season. High levels of respiratory virus activity are anticipated to bring more patients to nationwide hospitals, which are still experiencing staffing shortages and increased patient volumes.

“Data from the Southern Hemisphere are not good,” said Dr. Binnicker. “We need to double down on prevention measures,” such as masking and physical distancing.
