Cardiovascular pathology

A multidisciplinary approach

The section of cardiovascular pathology handles a wide variety of specimens from the heart and the body's vasculature. We practice a multidisciplinary approach to the consultative practice, leveraging our radiology and cardiology colleagues to review challenging cases and arrive at an efficient and specific diagnosis that is clinically actionable. Our patient-centric mission is at the heart of our approach.

Mayo Clinic Laboratories is the only lab in the United States that performs proteomic typing by tandem mass spectrometry on blood, dried blood spots, and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. Genetic testing for cardiomyopathies, hereditary arrhythmia syndromes, and aortopathies may be added to pathology consultations as indicated or performed as standalone testing at the request of the ordering provider.
