Blood products are frequently collected in one country and used within another country as part of military operations, international relief efforts, or meeting the needs of recipients with uncommon product requirements. To that end, the World Health Organization in collaboration with ICCBBA maintains the ISBT 128 coding system for all medical products of human origin including blood, organs, bone marrow, and cord blood.

A 52-year-old female presented to the emergency department with chest discomfort. Cardiac troponin I (TnI), measured using a goat antibody-based sandwich immunoassay (ADVIA Centaur, Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics), was 9.22ng/mL (reference interval: ≤0.04ng/mL). Follow-up testing included troponinT (TnT) measurement of 0.02 ng/mL (reference interval: ≤0.01ng/mL) using a mouse antibody and biotin/streptavidin-based sandwich immunoassay from Roche Diagnostics, Inc (Elecsys). Because of discrepant cardiac troponin concentrations, the physician contacted the laboratory director. The laboratory investigated for assay interference with results displayed in tables below.
