These interactive learning modules encompass all of the necessary skills in order to become a safe and effective phlebotomist. Topics include safety, equipment, skill sets, and methodologies of the techniques used in the collection process. Additional areas of focus include age-related collections (from geriatric to pediatric collections) as well as information on pre-analytical variables and the effects these have on specimen quality. This program will include a total of six modules released over time.

Overview:

This module will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to become a successful phlebotomist. The basics of phlebotomy, like the anatomy of the arm, and phlebotomy techniques, including tying a tourniquet, will be examined. Information related to collection devices, types of equipment used, and the situations each would be used in, will be shared. How to avoid failed attempts and how to proceed when you have a failed attempt also will be explained.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain which veins phlebotomists should look for, and the order in which they should be chosen.
  • Recognize the importance of assessing for a vein and anchoring in the venipuncture process.
  • Identify the types of equipment used in the phlebotomy process, recognizing the situations in which they would be used.

Intended Audience: This series is appropriate for phlebotomists, phlebotomy managers, phlebotomy educators, and other patient-care staff involved in specimen collection.
