New Test Build Language–Result Bill

As the complexity of our test menu has increased with the growing use of reflex algorithms, Mayo Clinic Laboratories has received constructive feedback from clients regarding the use of "Bill Only" codes and the correlated increase of time and costs needed to manually manage the associated billing.

In response to this feedback, we are attempting to find a resolution to this situation. As part of the go live of the new kidney stone analysis test (KIDST) on August 20, we will be introducing a new test type: “Result Bill.”

Orderable test KIDST will have an associated reflex that will only be charged if cleaning of the stone is performed. This reflex test, Stone Processing Charge (STNPC), will be a Result Bill.

The intent of a Result Bill is to allow for a result of “Performed” to be sent in the interface message. This will provide interfaced clients with the ability to initiate billing electronically when the reflex result is receivedAdditionally, clients will have the opportunity to flag and suppress the Performed result from their electronic medical record and, ultimately, block it from filing onto the patient report.

See an example of the HL7 interface outbound message below.
