Phlebotomy 2023

Empowering Our Employees During Challenging Times

This two-day conference will offer the opportunity to learn techniques for staffing, engagement, and retention to help empower employees. Attendees also will learn about building resiliency and managing change. Additionally, attendees will learn about pediatric comfort techniques; creating a safe environment while dealing with difficult patients; recruiting initiatives and training; and difficult sticks. An interactive session will give participants the opportunity to submit difficult phlebotomy cases ahead of time. These will be addressed during the live program. Finally, there will be a question-and-answer session featuring a panel of phlebotomy supervisors, phlebotomy educators, and human resources staff.

The conference format balances topics of general interest, which are presented in large-group sessions, with breakout sessions and tours geared toward specific areas of interest.

Breakout sessions

The following six breakout sessions will be offered during the conference. Please note that tours are available at the same time as breakout sessions, so you will need to select one or the other to attend. You will have the opportunity to choose the sessions you would like to attend when you complete the online registration form.

Creating a Safe Environment While Dealing with Difficult Patients

Phlebotomists interact with people of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs on a daily basis. While most interactions go smoothly, unfortunately others may be confusing or upsetting. It can be difficult to know what our role is as phlebotomists if a patient or co-worker makes a discriminatory or hurtful remark. Phlebotomists are a vital part of a care team and should feel empowered to be champions for inclusion and equality in the workplace. This session will examine real-world situations phlebotomists have faced and will provide tools to handle those instances with professionalism and grace.

Where Have All the People Gone? Top Recruitment Strategies to Increase Workforce Stability

In a competitive job market it can be a challenge to find and retain quality phlebotomists. Together we will explore options for recruitment, in addition to phlebotomy education and training opportunities.

Pediatric Comfort Techniques

This interactive session will explore different tools medical professionals can use to help reduce fear and anxiety associated with lab draws, IV starts, and other health-related procedures in pediatric patients. Suggestions for building rapport quickly, demonstration of comfort positions, tips for procedural preparation, and the secrets of magicians will be shared. Attendees will have the opportunity to try out various techniques they learn, as part of a hands-on experience. The tools from this session will help you succeed in your practice and improve the overall medical experience for pediatric patients.

Time is of the Essence: The Importance of Timed Blood Collections

The timing of blood collection is an important consideration for some clinical laboratory tests, and phlebotomists play a crucial role in providing the right samples at the right time.  Specimens may be obtained at a certain time of day or at a certain interval after another event. This can include therapeutic drug monitoring, glucose monitoring, blood cultures, and other laboratory tests. Accurate interpretation of test results can only be accomplished if these specimens are collected within a defined window of time.

Strategies for Success When Collecting Difficult Venipunctures

In this presentation we will discuss difficult collections. You will learn the importance of experience, mindset, and utilizing resources to be successful at collecting difficult venipunctures.

Building Resiliency and Managing Change

We are at a unique point in time, with changes occurring almost continuously. This session will describe a structured approach to managing changes in the workplace. We will discuss strategies you can use to prepare yourself and others for changes. Finally, we will explore strategies to keep yourself and your team healthy during these challenging times.
